Moonshine is a homemade, high alcohol content liquor that has a long history in many countries across the world, but especially in the American south. The illegal nature of the drink caused many distillers and smugglers to work at night to avoid detection, thus the word ""moonshine", since it was produced by the light of the moon.
Mountain folk know how to party, and many a fantastic bluegrass record has been made with white lighting as the fuel.
This playlist features 21 songs about, or that feature moonshine prominently. I have limited the list to include only roots music -- bluegrass, folk, country, alt-country, old-time and blues help keep a working class continuity, which fits the subject matter nicely.
Being from North Carolina, it doesn't take me long to get into the heart of moonshine country, and if you've ever taken a swig of this stuff you know how powerful it can be. It hurts at first, but once you get your first mason jar down it gets easier.
