Sons Make Grammy History

Yahoo! Music, Jan 15, 2002 3:00 pm PST
(1/15/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Bob Marley's sons recently made Grammy Awards history: Ky-Mani and Damian Marley individually received nods for best reggae album, making them the first siblings to compete against one another in that Grammy category.

Despite the competitive nature of the awards, the Marleys are talking family unity as the close-knit brothers celebrate their nominations as well as the Grammy nod for Rebel Music - The Bob Marley Story, which is up for best long form music video.

Ky-Mani, who was nominated for his album Many More Roads, told LAUNCH, "For me and him (Damian), it's not a rivalry. So for me, if him win it, it's like me win it. And if me win it, it's like him win it."

Damian was nominated for his release, Halfway Tree, and he echoed his brother's comments, saying, "It's all in the family, so we win one for the team, you know?"

Other albums picking up nominations in the best reggae album category include Luciano's A Brand New Day, Beres Hammond's Music Is Life, and Island Warriors, a compilation album featuring the work of various artists. Last year's winner in the category was Beenie Man's Art & Life.

Shaggy, who won the 1996 Grammy award for best reggae album, wasn't nominated in the category this year. However, "It Wasn't Me," Shaggy's reggae-flavored pop hit featuring Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent, is up for a Grammy in the best pop collaboration with vocals category.

The 44th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will take place February 27 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
