Talk About Late Friend Dale Earnhardt

Yahoo! Music, Mar 2, 2001 12:00 pm PST
(3/2/01, 12 p.m. ET) -- Although the tragedy occurred nearly two weeks ago (February 18), the death of NASCAR race car driver Dale Earnhardt is still being felt by those he left behind.

Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn say they still find it difficult to believe that their friend is gone. The duo found out about Earnhardt's death immediately before a scheduled performance in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Brooks says that he will find it hard to ever view NASCAR the same way again: "The biggest thing for me is that he was really the fun of the sport. I think for a lot of people, if you were a Gordon fan or Rusty Wallace or whoever fan, it was like everybody was measured against Earnhardt. You pulled for Earnhardt or you pulled for your guy to beat him. He was sort of the whole barometer on the track, you know, and with him being gone we are all going to have to re-evaluate how we feel about a NASCAR race. And we will, eventually, but for right now it sure takes some of the fun out of it."

Earnhardt was featured in Brooks & Dunn's video for "Honky Tonk Truth," a cut from 1997's The Greatest Hits Collection.
