Brooks & Dunn Join ABC's Fourth Of July Special

Yahoo! Music, Jun 21, 2002 5:00 pm PDT
(6/21/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Brooks & Dunn are the latest country act to step into the ABC Fourth Of July TV special spotlight. The special has been the subject of much controversy after Toby Keith spoke out frankly about being bumped off the show because newsman Peter Jennings didn't approve of the lyrical content of his song, "Courtesy Of The Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)." Then, Hank Williams Jr. stepped into the story when he replaced Keith, and the two singers exchanged media quotes about the event and their views. Now, Brooks & Dunn have signed on for the special, and they will pre-tape a performance of their Number One hit "Only In America" at a show in Milwaukee to be included in the special.

"When we put ‘Only In America’ out as a single last year," said Kix Brooks, "the whole idea was for people to use it to celebrate the Fourth Of July. You know, something fun that would be on the radio when you were blasting around with the top down on the Fourth Of July weekend. We opened our shows with it all last year because it really got people fired up and ready to celebrate all the opportunities that are out there."

"This year America has really been forced to look at itself and really see what we’re made of as a country," said Ronnie Dunn. "I think in the wake of September 11, we’re finding that we’re pretty committed to all the things that makes the U.S. such an awesome place to live. The way people have responded to this song, when we perform it in concert every night--that’s the cool thing. It makes me feel great when we hear the people shouting and cheering."

Other acts featured in the ABC Fourth Of July special include Alicia Keys, the Doobie Brothers, Sheryl Crow, and more.
