Reggae World Mourns Loss Of Pioneer
Yahoo! Music, Feb 5, 2003 5:00 pm PST(2/5/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- The reggae world is mourning the loss of VP Records founder Vincent G. Chin, who died of natural causes on Sunday (February 2) at 65. Reggae's Bounty Killer, Sean Paul, Freddie McGregor, and Buju Banton are just some of the artists who have worked with Chin over the years at the New York City based VP, the largest independent distributor of Caribbean music.
Chin and his wife Patricia hailed from Jamaica, where they got into the music business almost 50 years ago by supplying records for jukeboxes in bars around the island. Eventually the couple opened up Jamaica's famous Randy Records and a recording studio that was used by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, and other reggae greats.
The Chins later emigrated to the U.S. and opened up VP, whose name was derived from the initials of Vincent and Patricia, who survived her beloved husband. The company, which just struck a major distribution deal with Atlantic Records, is now run by Chin's sons, Christopher and Randy.
