Then it was back to work rehearsing the Broadway stage version of "The Color Purple," where the veteran R&B artist is taking on the role of Sofia beginning next month.
"My sister called me this morning," Khan, 54, said by phone Thursday from New York. "I had no expectations. I just pray that whenever I do a CD that people will feel what I'm trying to convey and will like it. To get the accolades for it, to be nominated, that's enough for me. It's amazing. I'm really happy."
No stranger to awards, Khan has won eight Grammys over the years. But she said being nominated never gets old.
Still, she had no plans to celebrate Thursday night.
"No, I have too much work to do," she said.
"I would love to celebrate," she added, laughing. "But maybe we should wait and see what happens first."
Award winners will be announced Feb. 10.
