Common Says He Was Humbled Watching 'Brown Sugar' Movie
Yahoo! Music, Nov 9, 2002 10:00 am PST(11/9/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Common's hip-hop classic "I Used To Love H.E.R.," from his 1994 album Resurrection, receives numerous accolades in the Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs film Brown Sugar.
The rapper, slated to release his fifth album, Electric Circus, on December 10, said he was humbled that his song was discussed with such high regard. "I got chills when I seen it in that Brown Sugar, how they was just like saying my lyrics. I'm like, 'Dag. I wrote this at the crib, just sitting there thinking about this, and now they saying my rhyme in a movie.' The movie was referring to 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' a lot."
Using a woman as a metaphor for hip-hop, the critically acclaimed "I Used To Love H.E.R." tells the story of Common's life-long relationship with the popular music genre.
Erykah Badu, Common's girlfriend, wrote her own version of the song for the Brown Sugar soundtrack. Badu's "Love Of My Life," featuring Common, is Number Five on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.
Common recently released "Come Close" featuring Mary J. Blige as the first single from Electric Circus.
