Smith, who lives in the south of Spain, has been moved to a private hospital nearby that specializes in spinal injuries. His publicist said the doctors are "cautiously optimistic." Prior to the accident, Smith, who was touring earlier this year with Mike's Smith Rock Engine, told LAUNCH why he moved to Spain.
"Unfortunately London is sort of getting more and more clogged up as big cities do, and I moved to Spain," Smith said. "I had some friends there where the sun shines like 330 days out of the year or more, and found a nice house and set up home there. And I can write and record from there."
Smith's agent said, "We're in the process of putting together a 2004 tour to mark the 40th anniversary of the British invasion, and we have every confidence that Mike Smith will be a part of it." Smith received a warm welcome from fans and press during his first U.S. tour in more than a decade earlier this year.
Sadly, on June 1, Smith's only son, Jamie, a 23-year-old Scuba instructor, died off the coast of Egypt while attempting to rescue a lost group of divers.
In August, Smith again took to the U.S. stages appearing at festivals and casinos in Las Vegas and the Midwest.
