Gray tells LAUNCH the songs reflect the somberness of the period for him. "The songs are very melancholic, and I suppose it's awash with a fair amount of misery and sort of introspection," he said. "Yes, it's reflective of sort of the atmosphere, I suppose, of that time where I was looking at the world through a pane of glass--you're on one side and the world's just rushing by in all its glory on the other. I suppose you're becoming detached from it."
The album was recorded in a very stripped-down, mostly acoustic manner. Gray says the vibe is not unlike that of the recordings of 1970s cult hero, Nick Drake. He tells LAUNCH, "It's a kind of somber and sparse and really quite gentle record. I mean, uptempo doesn't come into it. It's like White Ladder's heavy rock in comparison to Lost Songs."
Gray is currently showcasing portions of Lost Songs along selections from White Ladder on his current North American tour, which arrives Tuesday (April 17) at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati.
