Says Hooks Make 'Babylon' Succeed

Yahoo! Music, Jan 18, 2001 10:00 am PST
(1/18/01, 10 a.m. ET) - David Gray's White Ladder is on the move again, inching its way up the Billboard 200 album chart this week to Number 35. Meanwhile, the album's single, "Babylon," continues to grab listeners, and the low-key Welsh singer-songwriter has even found a home in perhaps the unlikeliest of places -- top 40 radio.

Gray explains to LAUNCH that it must be the song's hooks that have promoted such massive exposure. "There must be an instant quality to the song if it translates shoulder to shoulder with those kinds of records, where they just go for the jugular, basically," he says. "Like I said, I think it's the chorus, the fact [that] everything in it is a kind of hook. The verse is quite a hook, and then the chorus is the big one. People love a good chorus, I suppose. I mean, that's the sort of sense that I've made of it. But yeah, it amazed me that it would be played back to back with Eminem and Britney Spears."

But Gray admits to LAUNCH that he is somewhat confused by the American way of marketing music. "I'm taking a degree in American charts and radio formats," he jokes. "I think I should be finished in about four or five years."
