'Babylon' Debuts On Singles Chart

Yahoo! Music, Dec 1, 2000 10:00 am PST
(12/1/00, 10 a.m. ET) - David Gray's slow, steady climb into the mainstream with the album White Ladder continues as his single, "Babylon," claimed the Number 73 slot on the current Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the second week in a row. White Ladder, meanwhile, holds the Number 71 position on the Billboard 200 album chart, while selling nearly 50 percent better this week than last, according to sources.

The Welsh singer-songwriter's most recent success can be attributed in part to the exposure of "Babylon," which had gained considerable radio spins and prominent TV time thanks to recent appearances on Saturday Night Live and The Late Show With David Letterman. Still, Gray tells LAUNCH that, at its core, the album's been getting heard on a much more intimate level.

"The record seems to work on a word-of-mouth basis," he says. "People like it, they play it for someone, and other people like it. From the moment we made and just started giving it away to absolutely everybody, it's just grown and grown, and it hasn't stopped. And it's still getting bigger."

Gray begins a string of dates back home in the United Kingdom in Glasgow, Scotland Thursday (December 7).
