Puffy Attorney Equates Verdict To Super Bowl Victory

Yahoo! Music, Mar 16, 2001 10:00 pm PST
(3/16/01, 9 p.m. ET) - Sean "Puffy" Combs attorney Ben Brafman was ecstatic that the Manhattan Supreme Court jury acquitted Combs of the five counts of bribery and illegal gun possession charged against him. Following the announcement of Combs's acquittal today, Brafman compared the victory to winning the Super Bowl. "It's quite customary when people win the Super Bowl they are on television saying they are going to Disneyland," he said. "Well, I feel like I just won the Super Bowl. This quarterback is going right to synagogue to thank God."

In Brafman's January 31 opening statement, he told jurors that Puffy was being dealt a bum rap. "You can call him Sean, you can call him Mr. Combs, you can call him Puff Daddy. You can call him just plain Puffy. But the one thing you cannot do in this case is call him guilty." Brafman later said, "This case is not about rap music. It's about rap--a bum rap."

On Tuesday (March 13) Brafman sought to discredit all witnesses opposing Combs, accusing some of them to be seeking financial gain. Said Brafman, "They want you to conclude on the basis of two pimps from the street, a deadbeat dad, and two people in the club that gave conflicting stories, and lawsuits testimony that has no logic, no merit and does not make sense."

Earlier in the trial, Brafman said Combs had remained relatively optimistic about the trial. "Puffy from the beginning has been very confident--eager to proceed--has shown me a great deal of class, and he has great faith in the system of trial by jury," Brafman said.
