Enrique Iglesias Accused Of Copyright Infringement

Yahoo! Music, Oct 21, 2003 4:00 pm PDT
(10/21/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Did Enrique Iglesias steal the musical composition for his hit song "Escape"? According to a recently filed federal lawsuit, the title track off his 2001 album is actually a revamped version of a song called "Remind Me." Henry Lorenzo Haynes claims he wrote and received the copyright for "Remind Me" in early 2001, and he says he brought the song to Iglesias and producer Steve Morales for their consideration. After presenting them the song, Haynes says he was banned from the studio. Haynes received no credit for his work on the song.

The lawsuit argues that "even an ordinary observer can hear the exact copy...The misappropriation is severe."

Calls to Interscope Records, which is Iglesias's record label, weren't returned by press time.

"Escape" peaked at Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2002.
