Eve Cops to Drunk Driving

E! Online, Jun 28, 2007 7:00 am PDT
After copping to some booze-fueled bad motoring, Eve is ready to SCRAM.

The actress, rapper and erstwhile Ruff Ryder pleaded no contest Thursday to a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge stemming from an early morning arrest Apr. 26 in which she parked her gold Maserati smack in the middle of a center divider.

The Grammy winner was not present in Los Angeles Superior Court to enter her plea to the count of driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent, according to Frank Mateljan, spokesman for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office. Instead, she dispatched attorney Blair Berk (who also represents fellow embattled celebrity Lindsay Lohan) to do the deed.

Eve was in turn ordered to sport a SCRAM alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet for 45 days, enroll in a three-month first-offender alcohol-education program, attend at least 10 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and spend 36 months in informal probation, during which time she must obey all laws but will not have to report to a parole officer.

The 28-year-old Barbershop star was also fined $1,400.

The plea bargain was a turn-around from the star's attitude in court a month ago, when she entered a not guilty plea.

The performer, whose full name is Eve Jihan Jeffers, was not injured during the April accident, in which she plowed her car into a center divider on Hollywood Boulevard at 2:40 a.m. Cops administered a Breathalyzer test and then took her into custody and booked her on suspicion of driving under the influence.

While she was drying out, she received a visit from Sean Penn.

A hearing has been set for July 20, at which time Eve's lawyer must prove that the rapper has enrolled in an alcohol-education program and is hooked up to the booze-sniffing bracelet.
