Floetry Singer Marsha Ambrosius Signs Solo Deal With Dr. Dre

Yahoo! Music, Jan 30, 2006 7:00 pm PST
The vocal half of Grammy-nominated duo Floetry, Marsha Ambrosius, has signed a solo recording deal with hip-hop hitmaker Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, according to Billboard.com. The singer-songwriter says she is thrilled at the chance to work with Dre, who has only worked on a few projects in recent years. "Who wouldn't? It's a lifetime opportunity," she said, adding, "It's not like he offers to do an album with everybody."

The invitation to work with the rapper-producer came late last year, when Ambrosius and partner Natalie Stewart were performing two Floetry shows at The Roxy in Los Angeles. The audience included a number of other music makers, including Dre and Prince. Ambrosius ran into Dre later the same week, and when he played her a track she soon found herself in his studio, singing the vocal hook. The seeds for the Ambrosius solo project were sown.

"It's all very much a dream," Ambrosius added. "I've always wanted to do a solo album. However, I didn't expect this to come when it did. But I'm ready for it."

In the meantime, Floetry is shooting a new video for their tune "Lay Down," the next single from the 2005 Flo'Ology, and are set to begin a new nationwide tour in March.

The group has been nominated for a Best Urban/Alternative Performance Grammy this year for another track from Flo'Ology called "SupaStar." Ambrosius recently explained that the group's unique sound puts it into a genre of its own, called "floetry": "This is a creative album by two chicks from Britain. She's a poet, I'm a singer. We put our collaboration, it's floetry--floetry is the genre."
