Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson has been named patron of Scotland's largest HIV charity, Waverley Care, based in her home city of Edinburgh. The singer will work to raise awareness of HIV and the organization, which offers care and support to patients, relatives, and friends affected by AIDS and HIV.
The 36-year-old vocalist also said she once had an AIDS scare herself. She tells LAUNCH that with some education, perhaps the experience might have been less frightening. "I was called upon by a former lover who said I should really go and get checked out and it was absolutely terrifying," she notes. "I mean, I think to be faced with the possibility of living with something like HIV or AIDS is scary enough, but when you take into account the amount of ignorance out there and the amount of fear, it sort of compounds the whole concept of misery that's involved."
Manson adds, "All the ignorance and fear don't need to be there. It could be so easily removed."
This is the second time this year that Manson has used her public standing to put forth AIDS awareness. At the beginning of 2001 she joined Elton John and Mary J. Blige as co-spokespeople for the MAC Aids Fund, sponsored by MAC Cosmetics.
