Singer Trevi sues promoter for libel

AP, Jul 11, 2007 11:35 pm PDT
Mexican pop diva Gloria Trevi has filed a lawsuit for libel against a promoter who allegedly said she was an accomplice in her daughter's death, Trevi's lawyer said Wednesday.

The lawsuit was filed in Miami, Fla., where Mexican promoter Andres Puentes reportedly told a radio station that Trevi and one of her former backup singers acted in complicity in the death of Trevi's daughter, lawyer Richard Diaz told the government news agency Notimex.

Diaz said Trevi is suing Puentes for $4 million.

Trevi's publicist in Mexico said the singer would not comment on the case.

Trevi gave birth to a girl in 1999 in Brazil, where she and her manager went after they were accused of rape and kidnapping in Mexico. The baby died months later under mysterious circumstances. She later gave birth to a son in a Brazilian prison.

Trevi was cleared on rape and kidnapping charges in 2004 after spending almost five years in Mexican and Brazilian prisons.

Seen as a Latin American version of Madonna, Trevi's music about sexual liberation and teenage frustration became widely popular in the early 1990s.

Her five albums were smash hits and her 1998 contract with Televisa made Trevi the highest-paid female performer in Latin America.

The charges against her stemmed from accusations that her backup singers had been sexually abused by Trevi and her former manager Sergio Andrade.
