Gretchen Wilson Goes Platinum With Debut Album

Yahoo! Music, Jun 14, 2004 3:00 pm PDT
A mere four weeks after the release of Gretchen Wilson's debut album, Here For The Party, the project has been certified platinum for sales of more than one million copies. The Sony Music Nashville staff and a number of Senate and Congressional representatives were on hand when Sony Nashville President John Grady surprised Wilson with both Gold and Platinum plaques in Nashville on Friday (June 11). In keeping with the theme of Wilson's debut single "Redneck Woman," which has spent a record five weeks at the top of the country charts, the background of the gold plaque was shag carpeting, and the background of the platinum plaque was paneling.

Here For The Party set the record for being the first album from a new artist to debut at Number One on Billboard's Country Music Chart and at Number Two on the trade magazine's all-genre Top 200 Chart.

The video for "Redneck Woman," which features cameos by Hank Williams, Jr., Kid Rock, Tanya Tucker, Big & Rich and James Otto, hit the top of CMT's Top 20 Countdown last week.

Wilson will perform on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Friday (June 18).
