Ian Brown Flies To Jail For Airline 'Monkey Business'

Yahoo! Music, Oct 26, 1998 8:00 pm PST
(10/26/98, 6 p.m. PST) - Former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown will spend four months behind bars after being found guilty of threatening a stewardess and captain onboard a British Airways flight (myLAUNCH, 10/22) from Paris to Manchester, according to the BBC. The sentence will mean that Brown will have to scrap his U.K. tour, which was scheduled for next month.

Unfinished Monkey Business, Brown's solo debut, which originally scheduled for U.S. release on Oct. 6, has been pushed back to sometime in early 1999. A spokesman at Mercury Records says the postponement was not a result of Brown's legal troubles, but due to scheduling at the label.

During the trial, held late last week in the U.K., Brown claimed he was only joking when he told a stewardess that he would chop off her hands.

"She waved her hand in what I considered to be a dismissive fashion," Brown testified. "As a result I said, 'Don't wave your hand at me like that.' To which she replied: 'I am sorry.' To which I smiled and said sorry's OK.""She then said: 'I apologize.' I said apologies are OK. As a side joke I said: 'If you do it again I'll chop it off.' She smiled at me and tutted and carried on pushing the trolley," he said.

An Ian Brown feature will run on myLAUNCH sometime in the coming months...possibly before Brown gets out of jail free.
