"I think the responsibility is to stick to your game," the singer told AP Radio. "If you were just making people dance before (and) suddenly you're popular I don't think you should change everything you do and start talking about politics. You should keep making people dance."
Johnson said he tries to include love songs and political tunes in his musical repertoire.
"I have love songs like 'Bubble Toes' that are fun to play live. Then I have other songs like 'Crying Shame' that talk about (the war in Iraq)," he said. "I mostly go off of feel (instead of trying to) bring up certain points or facts. I try to mix it up a little."
Johnson's latest CD, "In Between Dreams," is in stores now.
