Jethro Tull Won't 'Bungle' Tour Opener Tonight

Yahoo! Music, Jun 6, 2000 7:00 am PDT
(6/6/00, 7 a.m. ET) - Jethro Tull kicks off its North American tour tonight (June 6) at the Backyard in Austin, Texas, and the trek will have the band on the road until September 20, when the tour wraps up with a show at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska. With as many songs as Jethro Tull has recorded, putting together a set list can't be an easy proposition.

However, frontman Ian Anderson told LAUNCH there's one song he can pretty much guarantee you won't hear at a Tull concert. "Well, 'Bungle In The Jungle' would certainly be a chore, 'cause it's not one that we've ever really successfully played," he said. "We tried it back in 1974 when we released that album, Warchild. And although 'Bungle In The Jungle' was successful as a radio single in the U.S.A., it wasn't particularly popular, for example, in Europe. But we did try to play it back then, and it just didn't really click as a live performance number."

When pressed for more details, Anderson told LAUNCH, "I suppose because it is a little more commercial, a little more radio-friendly. And it sounds fine in the context of hearing it on FM radio, but I'm not sure that it works as a live performance piece," he said. "It seems a little bit self-consciously pop, dare I say. You know, it was fun doing it in the studio, but I don't really get a big kick out of doing it live, and from the point of view of the other guys, I wouldn't imagine it's a very challenging piece for them to play."
