The entertainer collapsed Wednesday while performing at a Christmas concert in Goteborg, Sweden and fell off the side of the stage, where she was caught by a technician, avoiding further injury, a concert promoter said.
"It was a terrible situation," promoter Michael Silfverskiold told Reuters. "You could see she was in pain."
Minnelli, 61, was rushed back to her hotel, where a doctor was waiting. On Thursday, she was flown home to the United States on the advice of her doctors there.
"They decided together with her management that it's best for Liza to go to the U.S. right away," Zlakto Nedanovski, a spokesman for the concert's organizers, told the Associated Press.
Minnelli's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, issued a statement saying the singer had "complained of dizziness" before the program and that she "became very ill after the show began."
"As a result, she was unable to finish her performance and was rushed back to her hotel by her manager," Rosenberg said.
The singer's manager, Gary Labriola, indicated that Minnelli's diagnosis remained unclear.
"We don't yet know what happened, we are all very worried," he said.
At the time of her collapse, Minnelli was performing alongside several Swedish artists in a show called "A Classic Christmas Night." It was the fourth and last show in a series of four concerts.
Following the Oscar-, Golden Globe-, Emmy- and Tony Award-winning artist's abrupt departure, police were called to the Scandinavium concert hall in response to reports of angry concertgoers demanding their money back.
However, by the time officials arrived, there were no signs of trouble, police said.
