A press release from Columbia Records stated: "In the wake of the tragic terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, Artists Against AIDS Worldwide, realizing the recording's powerful healing message extended beyond the scope of the project's original aim, decided to donate 50 percent of its proceeds to the United Way's September 11th Fund and 50 percent to the AIDS relief effort, which includes the Global AIDS Alliance, among others."
Five different mixes of the song appear on the CD single, which was made available to radio stations nationwide on Friday (September 21) and will be commercially available October 23. The track, recorded at New York's Battery Recording Studio, was originally scheduled for release on December 1, World AIDS Day, but was pushed up in light of recent events.
