Group forms to head off Neverland development

AP, Jul 20, 2009 2:00 pm PDT
Neverland's neighbors are ganging up against any moves to turn Michael Jackson's former home into a tourist destination.

Local activist Bob Field said Monday that residents of the rural Santa Ynez Valley had formed a group called "Never!" to oppose any attempts to convert the remote Neverland ranch into a commercial venue.

Property co-owner Thomas Barack hasn't proposed developing the site, but Field says the group wants solid reassurances that he won't.

Field says the area doesn't have the roads, police or other infrastructure to support crowds drawn to a Graceland-like tourist attraction, which he said would disrupt the enclave's tranquility.

Barack is chairman and CEO of Los Angeles-based investment firm Colony Capital LLC. Colony spokesman Owen Blicksilver had no immediate comment.
