Blame It On The Rain? Milli Vanilli Scandal Examined In VH1 Documentary

Yahoo! Music, Aug 25, 1997 3:00 am PDT
(8/25/97) - Last night, August 24th, VH1 premiered a rags-to-riches-to-rags rockumentary on the 1990 Milli Vanilli scandal, which portrayed the lip-synching duo in a more sensitive, serious light. The hour-long program, part of VH1's new Behind The Music series, depicted the multi-braided Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus as naive puppets in the game of producer/Svengali Frank Farien; Rob and Fab foolishly signed their contract without managers or lawyers, never anticipating how long they would have to keep up their charade. In addition to the highlights and lowlights of Milli Vanilli's brief career--their many videos, the Club MTV tour, the revoked Grammy Award, their alleged attempts to strong-arm Farien into letting them sing for real, the world-infamous press conference where they tried to prove they could actually sing, their self-deprecating Carefree gum commercial and their short-lived reincarnation as Rob & Fab on the Arsenio Hall Show--the documentary delved into the sad aftermath of the scandal, like Rob's post-Manilli drug abuse, threatened suicide and car-theft arrest. The show ended on an upbeat note, with Fab pursuing a solo career in L.A. and Rob clean and sober. The Milli Vanilli installment of Behind The Music was followed by another episode focusing on the crash-and-burn career of fallen rap superstar M.C. Hammer.
