Dissed By Mayor Of St. Louis

Yahoo! Music, Oct 24, 2000 5:00 pm PDT
(10/24/00, 5 p.m. ET) - Super-hot St. Louis native Nelly was recently denied a proclamation by St. Louis Mayor Clarence Harmon. Earlier this month, Nelly hosted a huge multiplatinum celebration in his hometown. A local publication, Notes From The Underground, honored Nelly as the best St. Louis citizen of 2000. But when the organizers of the annual St. Louis Gateway Classic football event asked Mayor Harmon to honor Nelly with a proclamation, the mayor refused. He cited the title of Nelly's mega-hit "Country Grammar (Hot S--t)" and stated that St. Louis residents found it offensive.

Mayor Harmon went on to elaborate in a prepared statement: "Just because you're platinum ought not to get you some recognition if what you say is offensive. I couldn't officially provide the city's blessing on something like that."

In the meantime, several local papers have run editorials criticizing the mayor's decision, and Nelly's new hit "E.I." continues to climb the charts. Country Grammar, Nelly's debut album, is presently Number Two on the Billboard 200 album chart and has sold more than three million copies to reach triple-platinum status.

Nelly will co-headline a tour with the Cash Money Millionaires that kicks off on November 14 at the Compaq Center in Houston. Lil' Kim, Kandi, Joe, and Profyle will also be on board for the tour.
