Nelly The Victim Of Charity Fraud

Music, May 19, 2003 5:00 pm PDT(5/19/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Just a day after superstar rapper Nelly announced a nationwide awareness and recruitment effort to find a bone marrow donor for his sister, Jackie Donahue, the siblings have learned that imposters are trying to steal money meant for the cause.
Reports of imposters making phone calls to supposedly "raise funds for Jackie" have surfaced in Los Angeles and in the rapper's home city, St. Louis.
A spokesperson for Nelly and his sister stated, "This is very sad to me that a celebrity used his status not only to help his sister, but also people nationwide, and some pathetic people chose to take advantage of the situation."
The spokesperson noted, "Jackie, disappointed but strong in faith, believes the imposters will get what they deserve from a higher power."
On Wednesday (May 14), in St. Louis, Nelly and Donahue announced her immediate need for a bone marrow donor, and the formation of "Jes Us 4 Jackie," a three-city bone marrow registry drive on June 21.
The event will target New York, St. Louis, and Los Angeles and specifically look for more African-American donors and donors of mixed heritage. The only way to legitimately make a monetary contribution is to visit jesus4jackie.com or call 1-888-531-3346.
