Two of his children are understood to have approached the local council, in a bid to mark Wilson's enormous influence on the area.
The proposal could see Whitworth Street West, the former home of the Hacienda nightclub, renamed Tony Wilson Way, Anthony H. Wilson Way, or Wilson Street West.
The council's city center spokesman, Pat Karney, is reported to have canvassed opinion from local residents to see if they will back the plan.
"We need two-thirds of people to agree, but I have gone 'round all the blocks and I am confident people will want to make history on that street," he said.
Tony Wilson died in August at age 57, after losing his battle with cancer.
