The boy band topped its nearest competitor, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP, by more than 2 million copies. Coming in a close third to Eminem was Britney Spears, whose Oops!...I Did It Again sold more than 7.8 million copies.
Aside from the teen poppers and hip-hoppers, veteran rock acts also fared well, as Santana and the Beatles placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with their recent releases. The lone contemporary rock act to make the list was Creed, coming in at number four with 6.5 million copies sold of Human Clay.
In total, music sales were up four percent in 2000 over 1999 numbers. In addition, the holiday shopping period from December 18 through December 24, 2000, represented the single biggest album selling week in the history of SoundScan. Following is a list of the top 10 albums of 2000, and the amount each sold:
