Chris Brown's New Song: "Changed Man," or Changed PR Plan?

By Chris Willman Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:02am PDT 350 Comments

A new Chris Brown song leaked into the Internet back in June, called "Not My Fault"—and regardless of any musical merit the tune might've had, the title itself will be taught in PR seminars for years to come as how not to follow up a domestic abuse scandal. But the singer has learned his lesson... about that particular blooper, anyway, if not necessarily any greater gaffe. Hence, his new song: "Kinda Maybe Possibly Slightly My Fault, Okay?"

Actually, this latest attempt at musical damage control is titled "A Changed Man." There hasn't been any official verification yet that this fresh leak really is Brown's forthcoming single, but if it's not him, it's an awfully good impression. And lyrics don't get much more self-referencing than the chorus's recurring woe-is-me reminder that "Everybody hates Chris."

But, suspicious as we might be of his motives for repentance, everybody loves a good redemption story. So how has Chris Brown changed, according to the song? Let us count the ways! Uh... there aren't any, in these lyrics. Essentially, the tune is about how much our man misses his girl, and how they still have a chance, or would, if only he weren't so misunderstood. As for what the narrator has done to amend his ways or redeem himself, these things remain a mystery, beyond the repetition of the title. His estanged lover's shrink would probably not call this Making A Good Case.

The ballad is accompanied by a surprisingly unprocessed piano, in contrast to Brown's heavily AutoTuned voice, which sets aside conventional wisdom that if you're making an argument for honesty, you might want to give up blatant electronic fakery, just for a forthright minute or two.

Yet initial fan reactions have skewed more positive than they did for "Not My Fault" (which, perhaps because of the backlash, still hasn't been officially released). When Brown sings, "Saying I'm sorry doesn't make it all right," does that make it all right for you? Or does redemption not come this instantly or this unsupported? Your comments are welcomed.
