Miley Retires From Twitter, Takes Up Rap
By Mon Oct 12, 2009 10:25am PDT 20 Comments
Miley Cyrus is "too busy" to be on Twitter any more. Have you got that, her 2,120,679 (former) followers? She's got a life, and you don't!
Maybe that's not quite the message Miley meant to send out when she (a) deleted her Twitter account and (b) created a rap song and video to justify her sudden exit from the social-networking service. But watch her attempt to be Flava Flav and see what you think:
Now, the "busy" excuse seems a little suspect when, in the last days of having a Twitter account, Cyrus was sending out as many as eight tweets an hour to her 2-million-plus fans. But perhaps the 16-year-old is getting philosophical in her old age, and maybe even becoming mindful of the maxim about how, when you're on your deathbed, nobody ever wishes they'd spent more time tweeting.
Also suspect, however, is the couplet where Cyrus claims: "No it wasn't because my friend told me to/Y'all know very well what you say I don't do." But this does seem to conflict with Miley's final tweet on Oct. 8: "FYI Liam doesn't have a twitter and he wants ME to delete mine with good reason." The influential force in question would be Liam Hemsworth, 18, her costar in the upcoming movie The Last Song, and her reported (and unconvincingly oft-denied) boyfriend.
Other clues to her exit from Twitter may be found in the remnants from her final days of constant self-revelation. Tweets like: "@ddlovato It's really hard to be best friends since I don't even know you anymore. &I DON'T miss you. AT ALL. Even if there is a FIRE! HA!" And: "I can't sleep so I think I'm just gonna lay in bed and think about how much I hate @ddlovato Its [sic] what I spend most of my time doing. Haha!" This was a fake feud with Demi Lovato that some bloggers mistook as real, to her apparent chagrin. But was it a "real fake" feud? Or a fake feud intended to be a smokescreen for a real feud? How will we ever intuit the truth, now that "@mileycyrus" lives on only in cache?
It's only a matter of time until some Chris Crocker type makes a video tearfully begging Miley to get back to where she once belonged and resume "tweeting about pimples," as she put it in her rap video.
And that person may be... her daddy. You can bet your bottom dollar Billy Ray Cyrus still has his Twitter account (@billyraycyrus), and he's been using it to send his daughter bereft messages, like: "Miley. You are a light in a world of darkness. You were born ‘Destiny Hope Cyrus' for a reason. You can't leave everyone now. We r countin on u."
It's hard not to think that maybe the reason she was born Destiny Hope Cyrus is because he named her that, but far be it from us to doubt the ways of providence. Billy Ray also tweeted: "I understand ‘it is true one bad apple spoils the bunch.' But listen to the words of your songs ‘Stand... for what ya believe in'... Remember?"
Papa Cyrus sounds like he's trying to talk the girl off a ledge, not urge her back onto a social networking site. He's got to make her understand that not maintaining the fake-fake feud with Demi is interrupting God's plan!
He's not the only one distraught. Ever the wag, fellow pop star John Mayer expressed his dismay: "I can't help but find myself asking the question ‘What would Miley have tweeted about this?'"
Don't worry, Billy Ray and John. Show business has a long history of short-lived retirements. Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Jay-Z—they all swore they were going away, and then thought better of it within a few short years. Miley's retirement from Twitter surely won't be any different. Stand for what ya believe in, Miley. We r countin on u.
