Cheaters owe Jason Derülo thanks. The 20-year-old singer/songwriter/producer has scored a top 5 hit by writing a song that asks a scorned girlfriend for a second chance.
Apology records are typically ballads that thread on
mood-setting thematic music. But Jason's "Whatcha Say" feels
more like a hip-hop anthem with rapid fire snare drum breaks, and punchy,
marching band styled trumpets.
The straight-forward lyrics, lean heavy on remorse: "Though you caught me cheatin'...I really need you in my life."
The artist from Miramar, Florida recently stopped by the Yahoo! office to play a couple songs from his album due out next year. American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi is his A&R.
Jason, who has worked with Lil' Wayne, Pitbull, and Diddy,
explained how attending performing arts high schools shaped his musical tastes.
He also discussed winning an Apollo competition in 2006, getting his first
songwriting credit when he was 16, and starring in an upcoming MTV movie based
on his real life persona.
Check out my video interview, as well as a special making of "Whatcha Say" clip.
