Daltrey Alright; Who Returns to the Road

E! Online, Mar 23, 2007 9:52 am PDT
The Who are rocking again.

With frontman Roger Daltrey fully recovered from a nasty bout of bronchitis, the legendary British rockers resumed their U.S. tour Thursday night with a sell-out gig in Little Rock, Arkansas.

"Boy it feels good to be out of bed," the pumped-up singer told the crowd a half hour into the band's show at Alltel Arena.

After receiving the all-clear from Daltrey's doctors, the Who performed a solid 95-minute set of classics from their heyday in the '60s and '70s, as well as a suite of new songs from their latest album, Endless Wire—their first studio effort in two decades.

Throughout the show, the rocker's pipes did not waver, though per local reports, Daltrey was spotted coughing away from the microphone and sipping a bottle of water occasionally. He also rested his voice when guitarist Pete Townshend sang lead on "Eminence Front."

The band capped off the evening by tearing through 20 minutes' worth of encores, including a slew of hits from their seminal rock opera, Tommy.

The Who were forced to cancel their concert at Ford Amphitheater in Tampa, Florida, last Tuesday when the ailing 63-year-old crooner walked off the stage moments after the band launched into the opening cords of their signature tune and opening number, "I Can't Explain."

"I just talked to Roger and he can barely speak," Townshend announced at the time. "I tried to get him to come out here, but he's really, really sick."

As a result of Daltrey's illness, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers subsequently scrapped a Saturday performance in Mexico City, which would've marked their first appearance in Mexico, as well as a Tuesday concert in San Antonio.

The Who have since rescheduled the Tampa show for Mar. 25. No word whether they'll do the same south of the border, though a statement on their Website said they hoped to make it up soon and are exploring potential dates.

Before Thursday's night show, Townshend, the group's principal songwriter, thanked fans for their patience on his blog and confirmed that Daltrey will be well enough to finish their Stateside swing, which also includes stops in Oklahoma and Ft. Lauderdale.

"The last four shows of the tour will go ahead," Townshend wrote. "Roger has been advised by no less than three doctors that he is OK to perform and although I think he may still find the next few days hard (more shows in a row than we normally do) I'm sure we'll be great."

The Who wraps up the current jaunt Mar. 26 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. After that, they'll head across the pond to kick off a European trek in May and June, followed by a series of dates in Japan, Australia and South America as part of their first full-blown world tour in more than 20 years.
