Receives First American Music Award Nomination

(11/15/00, 1 p.m. ET) - Latin superstar Shakira received word this week that she has been nominated for her first American Music Award in the category of favorite Latin artist, alongside Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias.

From Shakira's studio in Uruguay -- where she is hard at work writing her English-language debut album, set for release next year -- the Colombian-born singer-songwriter responded with delight after word of the nomination reached her: "This is a special vote of confidence from my American fans, and it comes at an important time for me as I work on my next project. I want to make a great album, with honest songs and great musicianship. I've written over 30 songs so far, some in English and some in Spanish, and I am very excited about the way it's sounding."

At the recent Latin Grammy Awards, the 23-year-old Colombian-born artist grabbed two awards: best female rock vocalist and best female pop vocalist. Shakira's next Epic Records release is due in the spring of 2001.
