Steven Curtis Chapman To Testify Before Congress

Yahoo! Music, May 17, 1999 4:00 am PDT
(5/17/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - Grammy-winning contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman will testify on school violence before the U.S. House Of Representative's Early Childhood, Youth And Families Subcommittee on Tuesday (May 18).

Joining Chapman in presenting testimony before Congress will be students and teachers from Paducah, Ky.; Littleton, Colo., and Springfield, Ore., as well as school violence experts.

Chapman, a native of Paducah, became involved in the school violence issue when a student turned a gun on a before-school prayer group at his alma mater, Paducah's Heath High. Chapman was asked to participate in the funerals of the three students killed in the incident, and later held a benefit concert where he unveiled a song he wrote for the victims, "With Hope." That song appears on Chapman's first new release in three years, Speechless, which is due June 15.

Chapman told LAUNCH that his involvement in the Paducah funerals, which occurred just a few months into his one-year sabbatical, had a profound impact on him. "That's something where if you look at the schedule, it was probably only a couple of weeks [out of my life]. But it just turned things upside down. You're not just sitting around thinking about cleaning out a closet anymore, you're thinking about heavy stuff, and you're struggling through that."
