Sting received the second Academy Award nomination of his career today (February 12) for writing the music and lyrics for "Until" from the movie Kate & Leopold. The 50-year-old singer-songwriter was previously nominated last year in the music (song) category for his track "My Funny Friend And Me" from the Walt Disney Pictures film, The Emperor's New Groove.
McCartney scored his third career Academy Award nomination for "Vanilla Sky," taken from the movie of the same name. McCartney was previously nominated for his song "Live And Let Die" in 1973, and he won an Academy Award in the music (original song score) category in 1970 for "Let It Be" as a member of the Beatles.
The other nominees in the music (song) category include Enya for "May It Be" from The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, and Diane Warren for "There You'll Be" from Pearl Harbor (sung by Faith Hill). In addition, Randy Newman chalked up his 16th Academy Award nomination, for the song "If I Didn't Have You" from Monsters, Inc.
In the music (score) category, conductor-composer John Williams was nominated for his original scores for both A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone. The nominations were the 40th and 41st of Williams's career, and he has five wins to his credit.
James Horner earned his eighth career Academy Award nomination for his original score for A Beautiful Mind, and Newman was nominated for his original score for Monsters, Inc. Rounding out the category is Howard Shore, who was nominated for the first Academy Award of his career for the original score to The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring.
The 74th Annual Academy Awards will take place at the new Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on March 24. The show will air live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
