The sessions prevented the multiplatinum artist from attending Sunday's (September 22) Emmy Awards, where his televised concert, A&E In Concert: Sting In Tuscany...All This Time, won in the category of outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program. In a statement, Sting said, "I am so honored to have received this award. It's especially meaningful because of the invaluable input of my dear late friend (Billboard editor-in-chief) Timothy White. This Emmy is dedicated to Tim and the influence he had on music lovers everywhere."
White, who passed away on June 27, served as associate producer and head writer on the project.
Sting In Tuscany... was more than just another live album, having been recorded on September 11, 2001, while terrorists halfway across the world attacked New York and Washington D.C. The concert was also supposed to be a live webcast, but Sting shut down the link after just one song, "Fragile."
Upon introducing the song, he told the audience, "I'd like a minute's silence after that song. I don't want any applause, I just want us to stand there and think about what's happened today. (It's) difficult for all of us. I'm angry, I'm confused, I'm frightened, and I don't really want to give this meaningless act of violence any credence. It's totally and utterly pompous. We'll sing a song for those people who have lost their lives."
Sting In Tuscany... bested Billy Joel: In His Own Words, an installment of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and performances by comedians Wayne Brady and Ryan Stiles in episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway? for the Emmy.
