Toby Keith Takes Home 4 ACM Awards

Yahoo! Music, May 27, 2004 12:00 am PDT
Rebellious country icon Toby Keith dominated the 39th Annual Academy Of Country Music Awards Wednesday (May 26) broadcast from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Included in Keith's wins were two of the night's top awards, Entertainer Of The Year and Top Male Vocalist. For Entertainer Of The Year, Keith beat out contenders Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw. For the Top Male Vocalist category, Keith successfully competed against Chesney, Jackson and Keith Urban.

During his acceptance speech for Entertainer Of The Year, Keith said, "Wow. I always kept hoping this night would come. I want to thank the academy for voting on us on this deal. It's a great honor to be here. … Let's all go party tonight, rock it out here in Vegas."

The video for Keith's "Beer For My Horses," a duet with Willie Nelson, was named the ACM/LAUNCH Video Of The Year award, and Keith's album Shock 'N Y'All received the Album Of The Year honor.

Keith said working with Nelson on "Beer For My Horses" was a dream come true. "When we wrote this, me and Scotty Emerick, wrote this idea, I had one person in mind," Keith said. "I said, 'Man I got to get someone old school, country, from Texas.' I got Willie Nelson. He was gracious enough to do this."

Alan Jackson and Martina McBride were also a big winners, taking home two awards. Jackson received the Single Record Of The Year and Vocal Event Of The Year for his song "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" with Jimmy Buffett. McBride was the recipient of the Home Deport Humanitarian Award and the Top Female Vocalist award.

Jackson expressed excitement for being recognized for his collaboration with Buffett. "Thanks again," Jackson said when accepting the Vocal Event Of The Year award. "That was a fun event, and again thank Jimmy Buffett for being a part of that."

McBride was humbled by the Humanitarian award. "This is a real honor," McBride said. "The first thing I want to say is I don't really see this as a competition. I know that Brad and Charlie work just as hard as I do or harder, and what they do is just as important to them as what I do is to me, and I think they would agree with me that it's a responsibility and a privilege to get to use our 'celebrity,' if that's what you want to call it, to make the world a better place."

Nelson joked when presented with the Gene Weed Special Achievement Award. "I'll be honest with you," Nelson said, "when I first heard about this I thought they said the green weed award, so I said all right. But, the Gene Weed is even better. Thank ya'll very much."

Randy Travis was shocked that his song "Three Wooden Crosses" was dubbed the Song Of The Year. "It's great to be back again," Travis said. "It's been a while since I've been nominated for anything actually ... thank you very much."

Dierks Bently, Ray Price, Rascal Flatts, and Brooks & Dunn also took home awards. See the full winners list below.
