Following an X-ray examination of his upper vertebrae on Wednesday (July 10) and consultation with his French doctor, it was determined that Primrose would need surgery.
"Medical staff advise that Neil shall hopefully be discharged from hospital this weekend," band manager Ian McAndrew said. "Doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but it is unclear at this stage how long this will take."
The 30-year-old drummer's wife flew to France to be by his side, with the rest of the band--guitarist Andy Dunlop, bassist Dougie Payne, and singer Fran Healy--standing close by.
Travis issued a statement, praising members of the crew who rushed to rescue Primrose from the pool after the accident. "We hope that everyone will join us in wishing our friend and bandmate a full and quick recovery. We're all thinking of him." the statement said. "Thanks to all our fans and friends for all the support you have shown and we also want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the crew whose actions were so crucial on the night."
Primrose said in the statement that he would also like to thank all the fans for all their good wishes and would particularly like to express his gratitude to all the doctors and nurses in the hospital who are making his stay as comfortable as possible.
He talked to the Scottish Sun newspaper about the accident, explaining, "We went back to the hotel for a couple of beers and I dived into the pool. It was too shallow and I bumped my head and knocked myself out."
"The guys had been watching me, but then realized it looked a bit more serious," Primrose said. "I was floating beneath the surface of the water. They pretty much jumped in and got me out."
While select European dates have been cancelled, Travis is still hoping to appear at the V2002 festival in the U.K., scheduled for the weekend of August 16-17.
