Tragedy Strikes Danish Pearl Jam Gig

Yahoo! Music, Jun 30, 2000 10:00 pm PDT
(6/30/00, 11 p.m. ET) – Tragedy stuck at a Pearl Jam concert in Denmark when up to eight fans were crushed to death and at least three others were injured late Friday (June 30), according to Danish news reports. Pearl Jam was performing at the Roskilde festival, an annual event held near the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

According to reports, Pearl Jam was playing the festival's main stage. During the gig, the members of Pearl Jam reportedly asked the crowd to move back, because people were being crushed against the barrier in front of the stage.

Due to the tragedy, Pearl Jam was forced to halt its performance and a set by the Cure was canceled, but performances on the festival's other six stages went on as scheduled, according to reports.

Inspired by the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Roskilde has been held yearly since 1971. The festival, which drew approximately 100,000 last year, began Thursday (June 29) and was scheduled to run through Sunday (July 2).

The Danish tragedy is already being compared to the 1979 stampede that left 11 people dead at a Who concert in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ironically, the Who is often cited as a major influence on Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who has even made guest appearances with Who guitarist Pete Townshend.
