(10/10/02, 7:30 p.m. ET) -- One day before the event, Creed canceled its appearance at the taping of a made-for-television concert at Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay, only to change its minds and perform Thursday (October 10), if only as a special guest, a spokesperson for the event tells LAUNCH.

"Although [lead singer] Scott Stapp has a bad throat, they were upset about disappointing fans in the Bay Area," the spokesperson said. "So they tip-toed back in as a special guest for an abbreviated appearance."

The Wallflowers stepped in as the headliner for T-Mobile's Rock The Rock event, which is the first rock concert ever on the famed island. The members of Creed then changed their minds. "This all happened [Wednesday]," the spokesperson tells LAUNCH.

The decision came amid the postponement of seven West Coast shows of the group's current tour in support of its current album, Weathered, beginning with the October 4 appearance in Bakersfield, California. The list now includes the upcoming dates in San Diego on Friday (October 11); Mountain View, California on Saturday (October 12); and Spokane, Washington on Monday (October 14), according to Creed's official website (creednet.com).

Word of Stapp's throat problems surfaced earlier in the week. A spokesperson for the promoter of the Los Angeles show, scheduled for Tuesday (October 8), told LAUNCH it was postponed due to an unspecified illness. Only days before, Creed drummer Scott Phillips told Bakersfield, California radio station KLLY that Stapp was suffering from over-stressed vocal cords and that his voice needs a rest, the Bakersfield Californian reports.

Creed's label has offered no confirmation regarding the illness nor any comment on the status of the group's future dates or possible make-up shows.
