The modern sounds appear at other times through the upcoming Red Letter Days, which counts "When You're On Top" as its opening track. Jakob Dylan tells LAUNCH that for the effort, "there were no boundaries...or no walls" getting in the way of the group's creative growth.
"I understand why it's there but there's an understanding that the Wallflowers is an American, kind of traditional rock band, but I don't think we ever intended to do that and I'm not interested in working within those kind of boundaries, you know? And I think that some of songs on this record just called for different sounds," he says. "And it's that simple."
Dylan further explains, "It's not premeditated, it's not like you sit around debating, 'Should we, shouldn't we?' or is anybody gonna not believe it. It's like, you know, it's as simple as gets. We listened to it, it sounded great, it was working in the song, and you just go on."
Red Letter Days arrives November 5 from Interscope Records. The group hits the road for a 14-date tour on November 20 in Denver. A more substantial tour is expected to follow.
